Alberta Banning Weed-and-Feed Products for Lawns

Friday November 14, 2008

The great province of Alberta, Canada (full disclosure, I grew up there) has legislated a ban on weed and feed products effective January 1st, 2010.

Weed and feed products are a fertilizer and an herbicide mixed together, usually a post emergent, broadleaf weed killer. The main reason for the ban is because of the "mobility" of the herbicide and it's affect on the water downstream from urban centers.

I've never liked weed and feed products because of the specific conditions necessary for applying them and how it forces you to apply herbicide to areas that may not have any weeds. I always advocate using fertilizer to feed the lawn and spot spraying or physical removal of weeds.
