Controlling moss

By August 13, 2009

Follow me on:

Although not traditionally thought of as a weed, moss is still considered a nuisance by some homeowners and the desire to get rid of moss can be as strong as that of crabgrass or dandelions.

Many moss control products are available ranging from ferrous sulfate to simple soap solutions. My favorite is a home-made solution of Ultra Dawn dish soap and water.

The important part about moss control lies not in killing the moss though. The key is to remove or alleviate the conditions favorable to moss growth.

A moss problem can be solved by simply pruning some branches, aerating, overseeding and/or reducing the amount of water used.

Another solution is to embrace the moss. Moss used as a ground cover alternative to lawn is striking. It looks great, has an interesting feel and may be more suited to a particular area than turf.
