Lawn mower racing has officially stepped into the annals of American sport, announcing the inaugural U.S. Open and inductees into National Lawn Mower Racing Hall of Fame.
The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) is a real governing body with standards and rules committees which organize and oversee over 140 sanctioned races per year. The US Open will feature hundreds of racing mowers from across America and Canada in 11 classes ranging from Stock (8mph) to Factory Experimental (60mph).
Despite being a serious organization, the USLMRA seems to be anything but. From it's founding on April Fools Day 1992 to some of the handles of their cast of characters including Bruce Kaufman, "Mr. Mow It All" USLMRA Founder and President, Tim The "Mowron" Robinson, and 2010 Hall of Fame inductee Ken "Turfinator" Smolecki.
What's the point of racing lawn mowers, you may ask? I'm sure the racers would say something like, "Because we can". What they seem to offer in spades though is affordable, family fun.
