With a weakened economy, people are sometimes forced to cut back on certain perks or luxuries they may have afforded themselves in the past. Lawn care is one of those services that a family on a tight budget may deem unnecessary.
Fortunately lawn care is a task that, for the most part, can be done without the aid of a professional lawn care service. All one needs is the right equipment and a little knowledge of how a lawn works.

Do you have any suggestions for improving a lawn that is full of weeds without using lots of chemicals, especially considering it’s the middle of the summer? Or any books or articles you could point me to? We bought a house with a little yard that the previous owners didn’t really take care of. We want to keep things organic, especially because we have two little boys who are in the yard all the time.
To be honest, it would probably be easiest (and agronomically smartest) to wait until early fall to do any serious improvements. The long days, intense heat, and humidity of summer can make it frustrating and nearly impossible to transform a weed infested lawn into something more acceptable.
As soon as the days get shorter and the temperatures cool down, it will be much easier (as this is the natural cycle of grass growth) to successfully sow seed and improve the lawn.

Hope this helps,
