Mowing the lawn can sometimes seem like a mundane activity, made even more boring by virtue of repetition. In reality, a lawn mower can be a deadly and dangerous tool, capable of amputating hands and feet, and throwing objects with deadly speed.
Safety should be a primary concern before, during, and after the mowing process.
Preparation
- Read the owner's manual and other training materials.
- Familiarize yourself with safe operation, safety decals, and operator controls.
- Never let children operate a lawn mower.
- The owner of the mower bears responsibility of accidents or injuries occurring to themselves, other people, or property.
- Only use manufacturer approved attachments.
- Lawn mower manufacturers recommend wearing appropriate clothing including a hard hat, safety glasses, and ear protection.
- Long hair, loose clothing, and jewelry are hazards and may get tangled in moving parts.
- Inspect lawn and be sure it is free from rocks, toys or other objects which can be thrown from mower.
- Handle fuel with care, using only approved containers equipped with spill-proof nozzles.
- Ensure all safety switches, shields, and safety controls are in place and functioning.
Operation
- Never run an engine indoors - exhaust fumes can be deadly.
- Do not adjust height of cut while engine is running.
- Be sure of your footing, especially when backing up or on wet grass.
- Be extra cautious on hillsides. Mow hillsides side to side.
- Do not operate mower without grass catcher or guards in place.
- Stop mower on level ground and shut off engine before leaving the operator's position for any reason.
- Stop mower and inspect blade after hitting objects or if abnormal vibrations occur.
- Always keep hands and feet away from cutting unit.
- Keep pets and bystanders away - especially children.
- Be aware of mower discharge direction and do not point it at anyone.
- Do not operate the mower under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Maintenance
- Stop engine, wait for all movement to stop, and disconnect spark plug wire before adjusting, cleaning or repairing.
- To prevent over-heating and fires, clean debris from cutting unit, drive unit, muffler, and engine.
- Use caution when cleaning or sharpening blade. Replace damaged blades - never straighten or weld a lawn mower blade.
