Seasonal Lawn Care

By , About.com Guide

Timing can be everything when it comes to lawn care. Every season has it's own maintenance routines as well as specific issues that arise. Planning a lawn care program by season can take away some of the confusion and makes it easier to get a grip on what can otherwise be a daunting task.
  1. Spring
  2. Summer
  3. Fall
  4. Winter

Spring

Spring lawn care is not as intense as many make it. Resist the urge to do too much, too early. For the most part, it's best to let the nature take it's course during the spring. Many practices normally thought of as spring rituals are actually better suited for the fall.

Summer

Summer is when the resiliency of the lawn is put to the test. A well prepared lawn will withstand the summer stresses of drought, pests, heat and disease. A deep and extensive root zone will provide a reserve of carbohydrates to aid the stressed lawn and get it through those long hot days.

Fall

Fall is the most important season in the world of lawn care. As the days get cooler and shorter, it is the perfect opportunity to overseed and prepare the lawn for the following season. It's also the ideal time for cultural practices like aerating, de-thatching and projects like sodding and lawn renovations.

Winter

A proper lawn care regimen is a year round endeavor, even in the winter. A lawn needs to be adequately prepared for winter and so do the tools and equipment needed to take care of it. It may not be as intense as the summer but it all counts towards a healthy lawn.
