The New York Times recently profiled the all organic Vineyard Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Superintendent Jeff Carlson provides world class playing conditions without any synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides. As a result, the worlds first and only all organic golf course is functioning into it's 9th year with excellent results.
The labor is intensive but offset by the lack of chemicals purchased, and the perceptions of playability over aesthetics are firmly in place. In fact, the organic aspect is a draw for the locals who view it as a badge of honor.
As someone who has been in the trenches of both golf course maintenance and organic land care, I can attest that what Mr. Carlson is doing is no small feat. Conventional golf course management in the northeast is very chemical intensive. From the constant spraying of fungicides and herbicides to the extensive use of synthetic fertilizers, just attempting to not use these products is a challenge.
What's reassuring is the success that is enjoyed by the Vineyard Golf Club. If a golf course can succeed with an organic maintenance regimen, so can the property that I'm in charge of, and so can your lawn.
